Food Review: Big Mama Korean Restaurant

Big Mama is a place to go to for homely Korean food :D I was craving for some Dakgalbi (Spicy chicken galbi) and was researching the Korean places in Singapore to try the dishes. I had initially wanted to go to Running Man restaurant, but unfortunately, the restaurant had closed down. After much researching, I finally decided to head to Big Mama for its Korean food! :D

Big Mama was located at Tiong Bahru which was a pretty far place. Thankfully, the boy drove :D The Tiong Bahru estate was one of the oldest estate in Singapore and it was amazing to see 2 to 5 storey flats still in existence today :D Too bad, I forgot to bring my camera out. Will drop by again in future to take photos! :D

Anyway, back to Big Mama! We ordered the Dakgalbi and one portion of fried rice (to be fried in with the left over chicken galbi later!)

As the same as usual Korean restaurants, banchan (side) dishes were served and they were refillable :D The kim chi, fired lotus with sesame dressing, fried crispy ikan bilis and the glass noodles stood out particularly. Yummy!

They fried the dakgalbi and presented the dish to us after frying. Did not manage to see them cook in front of us :( Doesn't the dakgalbi looked fantastic? :D

After finishing 3 quarters of the dakgalbi, the fried rice was fried into the leftover galbi. The delicious fried rice was pan fried with kimchi, generous serving of seaweed, sesame oil and sesame seed. The fried rice was delicious, better than what was shown in the photo! Thumbs Up for it! :D Had a fantastic lunch dakgalbi-ing! :P

Do give it a try if you are into Korean food! You will not want to miss this :D

Food Review: Lynn's Cakes and Coffee

Feeling down? How about sending a pretty rainbow to you? :D

Presenting Lynn's Cakes and Coffee - Rainbow cake!

I had heard a lot of good reviews on the cakes by Lynn's and decided to drop by for a slice of cake! :P

Lynn's Cakes, a halal cafe is located along a row of shophouses at Eng Kong Terrace, which was just a few doors away from Necessary Provision, a popular coffee cafe. There were so many cakes on display and oh my, they were really big slices. Unfortunately, the boy and I could not stomach too much cakes as we had our lunch earlier on, thus we took a while before deciding that we would try the rainbow cake. The cake was in pretty hues of colours and would immediately cheered up anyone's gloomy mood :)

There was a strong vanilla and butter flavour (it is a cake! What were you expecting? :P) with a hint of orangy taste. I was hoping that each colour would taste differently (e.g. different fruity taste) but it was not, unfortunately.

Nevertheless, we had a great time chilling at Lynn's Cakes and Coffee and we will be back for more other cakes such s Salted caramel and Oreo Cheesecakes! :)

A unique Valentine's Day

Happy Valentine's Day to everyone! Valentine's Day is a very commercialized day when you see every girl on the street carrying a bouquet of roses/flowers and the flowers were of rocket prices :X Dining places are also hard to find and everything/everywhere is just ridiculously expensive.

For this year's Valentine's Day, I wanted to do something different thus when I saw the Love Hunt 2015 organized by MyPaper, I asked the boy if he was keen to try it. We submitted our names and by sheer luck, we managed to get into the hunt being 1 out of the 100 teams :)

Before our hunt at Bugis+, we had our Valentine's Day lunch at Keisuke Tonkotsu King Four Seasons for ramen!

Presenting my Valentine's Day lunch - Summer Ramen!

The bowl of ramen was generously filled with toppings such as spring onions, cha siew, black fungus and the tonkotsu noodles :) Had a good time slurping up the noodles and the flavourful soup!

After lunch, we proceeded to our meet up point at Bugis+ atrium. We filled the indemnity form and get our team number "005" and tee shirts and went to change into our team tee shirts.

We looked like wearing 情侣装, don't you agree? :P We couldn't wait for the fun to start! After some performances, the honk sounded and we were rushing to our get clues and finding the different locations to do the challenges. It was like an amazing race where each team would need to find a clue to find the next location (either in Bugis+ or Bugis Junction) to complete a task. A successfully completed task would be given a red sticker and a unsuccessfully completed task would be given a green sticker. The unsuccessful task will result in an addition of 10 minutes to the overall time score. Each task would be given 1 minute to complete else it would be deemed as unsuccessful. 5 cupids were situated at Bugis+ and Bugis Junction where the team could approach them for help and for every clue provided by them, a 10 minutes addition would be included to the overall time score. The hunt was 3 hours and the team would need to complete every challenge (15 of them) before 5.30pm.

The next 1-2 hours saw the two of us running around Bugis+ and Bugis Junction searching for clues and doing the challenges. It was quite tiring but yet fun. We unfortunately got stuck at one of the clue which took quite long for us to complete :(

Here was one of the photos taken at one of the station after completing the challenges. It is a tee shirt with two holes and we would need to wear them within a minute. Cheese~~

We finished all our clues (we had to ask for a clue at the end because we could not figure out where the location was - another additional 10 minutes added to overall scoring) by 4.30pm. We finished all the 15 stations, failing one station at the dart station (additional 10 minutes added). By that time, we were quite exhausted and sweaty from all the perspiration.

We submitted the scoring and took a photo! :D We completed the 15 tasks together as a couple, each of us having our own strengths and our own weaknesses. It felt good to know that we were moving towards the same goal and putting our best effort to complete the challenges hand in hand, and always looking out for each other in the process :) A very meaningful Valentine's Day indeed! :D

We saw a guy with two cutely dressed dogs in the mood of CNY. We requested to take a photo with him which he willingly obliged :)

Even though we did not manage to win anything, we did have a lot of fun and collected our goodie bags and $50 capitaland voucher as part of the participation :)

Headed to future mom-in-law's place to have dinner and spent the rest of the night nua-ing at the sofa :D

Not forgetting, my dear presented me with three stalks of handmade roses and a card in the shape of a heart and a present :D

So touched with his efforts. Aren't the roses pretty? :D

And I got a Cony and Brown Line stuff toys from my boy :D

Simple bliss and sweet happiness. This year, I spent a very special Valentine's Day with my boy :)

What about you?

Food Review: Salted Caramel

Salted Caramel is one of my favourite icecream parlours in Singapore and the price is reasonable and the waffles there is crispy and there are different flavours for the icecream. Usually I will order two double scoops of icecream (one flavour each) to go with the waffles :D Greedy me!

The staff are friendly and you can request to taste the flavours before choosing them! And you can choose to complete the waffles with a choice of maple syrup or chocolate sauce. I had tried many flavours before, sometimes I go with heavier flavours (e.g. peanut butter for the saltiness, cookies and creme for the sweetness) or fruity flavours (e.g. lychee and rock melon) etc. There are so many combinations you can try with the waffles! :)

Today, I tried a new combination (rock melon and horlick). Sounds interesting? It tasted good too! I usually cut a small portion of waffles and tried each individual flavours with the waffles to see which flavours had a stronger taste. After which, I will eat the waffles with the two flavours - that's how I eat my waffles :D

A strongly recommended place for icecream waffles!

Food Review: Bosses Restaurant

After our visit to Madame Tussauds Singapore and Images of Singapore, we stopped by Bosses Restaurant (黑社会) for dim sum because we had long heard about the awesome food at Bosses and had never had the opportunity to try it before. It was just so coincidence that it happened to be the last day of promotion for 30% off all dim sum from 2.30 to 5.30pm due to Chinese New Year period, thus we decided to drop by Bosses.

The dim sum menu was pretty extensive with a lot of unique dishes and there were so much dishes we wanted to try but it was really unfortunate that we could not stuff so much food in our tummies :( Thus we could only pick and try those we really wanted to eat.

After looking at the menu for close to 20 minutes, we eliminated some of the dishes and tata~ presenting to you our dim sum of the day at Bosses!

Har Gau (Prawn Dumpling). The har gau came in big pieces of 4 and the har gau with the big prawn fillings were fresh and succulent. Instantly, two of them went into my mouth as soon as they arrived (and after photo taking of cause! :P)

Pan-fried Scallop Glutinous Rice Shumai - We were looking for siew mai and there were so many different types of siew mai on the menu. As this was indicated as a new item on the menu, we decided to give it a try! This siew mai was pan fried wrapped with glutinous rice and scallop was placed on top of the siew mai for an enhanced taste. It was a good dish for people who wanted to eat glutinous rice yet not too much and a change for something different.

Signature custard lava bun - The star of the menu :D I always loved custard lava bun and I did not manage to have it during my last dim sum visit to Tim Ho Wan as they do not have it in their menu. The skin of the steamed bun was in orangy yellow and the bun was so soft and fluffy, and full of flowy salted egg yolk! The greedy me had two of the buns! It is a must eat dish at Bosses!

Famous Chilli Crab Tart - A very special dish which I immediately wanted to order when I saw it on the menu. Who could have image the combination of chilli crab on tart? The tart was surprisingly crispy when bitten and not wet/moist from the chilli crab gravy. The chilli crab tarts had a distinctive flavour which you would not want to miss it!

Beancurd roll over the bridge - The beancurd roll was fried with the prawns in the wrapping and the taste was super good. The roll was crispy and yet not oily! :D

Our happy lunch! :D

I always love a good dim sum and I will be back again soon! :)

Madame Tussauds & Images of Singapore

As the boy had a free corporate ticket to Madame Tussauds Singapore and Images of Singapore, we decided to head to Sentosa for the trip to use the ticket. I bought a ticket upon entrance only to find out that the boat ride (free according to them) was under maintenance. Zzzzzz :X

We went to the Images of Singapore first because the officer at the reception area informed us that the show was starting.

To be honest, I had never been to the old Images of Singapore and this was the first time I stepped into Images of Singapore with changes/addition to the scenes. Personally, I think it was a waste of time to visit the Images of Singapore because I found the entire exhibition really lame and ridiculous with real actors attempting to inject humour but there was no laughter from the crowd. While I shall not comment too much and in details how I really feel about Images of Singapore, I would suggest you to skip this as it was not worth it and waste of time as we were stuck throughout the exhibition for close to 45 minutes unable to turn back and had to rely on actors to pick us up for the next scene.

After the draggy time at Images of Singapore (no photos allowed), we proceeded to Madame Tussauds. Some photos taken at Madame Tussauds:

As you could see, we did enjoy ourselves more at the Madame Tussauds Singapore. Compared to the Madame Tussauds at Hong Kong however, we felt that the wax figurines were more life like compared to the ones at Singapore which looked plastic-ky. Madame Tussauds at Singapore however, had more interactive components such as garland, hat, sunglasses, wigs etc which one could wore to take a photo with the figurines. It is worth a visit only if you have time to spare or else you can perhaps just visit the larger museums in Sydney or Hong Kong.

Nevertheless, we did enjoy ourselves at Madame Tussauds after a very disappointing visit at Images of Singapore.

Food Review: Les Patisseries

Finally, I managed to have a quiet and relaxing lunch at Les Patisseries, meeting up with the boyfriend and his colleague for lunch. Past few months were hectic and the number of total tabaos in just Jan and Feb had exceeded the number of total of tabaos over the past 4 years in corporate world =X

Brought them to the new cafe on the block - Les Patisseries. I had been wanting to try the food there for a while but just could not find a suitable time. So today was just the right time for a nice cafe dining :D

The cafe is quite small and not many seatings are available. There is a central kitchen where all the cooking and baking are done. The cakes and pastries on the display were the first to greet us the moment we entered and they looked impressive and drooling :) But unfortunately due to time, we did not manage to try them. There was no official menu as the available food sold in the cafe was shown on a blackboard.

The boy had eggs Benedict which came with two poached eggs and bacon with croissant and side salad. We could already smelt the aroma of the croissant even though we had not eaten it yet. The combination of the eggs Benedict tasted quite good and the boy was enjoying himself with the dish.

His colleague Yvonne and I had Mushroom Aglio Olio and it taste alright in my opinion. No one could ever go wrong with mushroom aglio olio, right? :P Quite a lot of garlic was used for the pasta which gave the pasta a garlicky taste though.

Had an enjoyable time at the cafe :) Shall visit here for its pastries and waffles soon!

Food Review: Leban HK Cafe

Our usual early mid week break saw us taking a break and dinner-ing at Leban HK Cafe. It had been a while since we visited Leban. We had a super late dinner as we were both rushing work in office and it took some time to travel from my place to Leban.

Thank goodness the cafe was not crowded when we reached and we managed to find a seat the moment we reached.

Our comfort food for the night :)

Both of us ordered the Pork Cartilage Tossed Noodles :) A good choice indeed, the tossed noodles were well cooked mixed with the well marinated flavours of the pork cartilage with a hint of spiciness :) Most importantly, the tossed noodles were moist and chewy the way I liked my noodles to be.

As usual, I could not resist the must-order dish - A serving of the Salted egg yolk fries. The fries were crispy and the salted egg yolk on fries tasted undeniably good! Thumbs Up! :D It is a good dish to munch and chat after dinner about the frustrating day we had and I think good food does have a calming effect :P A highly recommended dish if you are visiting Leban. Do give it a try! :D

Food Review: Tim Ho Wan

Saturday saw me out with Ren Cui at Plaza Singapura shopping and having dim sum! I was having dim sum cravings for a while back so explained the eagerness to have dim sum for lunch. I was thinking of having dim sum at Mouth Restaurant or Bao Today at Rendezvous Hotel but Ren Cui suggested Tim Ho Wan instead.

In actual fact, I was not keen to dine at Tim Ho Wan because of the food experience previously at Toa Payoh Branch. I had been looking forward to Tim Ho Wan ever since I had it at Hong Kong and the baked char siew bun had me longing for more. Tim Ho Wan is a Michelin-starred restaurant with very good reviews in Hong Kong. However, after the first experience at Toa Payoh Branch, I never went back anymore. The food tasted horrible, the har gao and siew mai was very dry, the baked char siew bun was not as crispy as what I had eaten in Hong Kong before. I had other dim sum as well but all the other dishes were too plain and so unmemorable that I never came back anymore. I do not understand why people would queue for the food as it was totally not worth the queue. Besides, I am not the type who like to queue very long for food because I will get angry when I am hungry :X A hungry woman is an angry woman :X

Anyway, I wasn't keen to eat at Tim Ho Wan but was thinking if I should perhaps give it another try since PS was the first branch. So off we went to Tim Ho Wan. The hype was also dying thus the queue was not long. after 10 minutes of queuing, we were ushered to an empty seat. The service was quite fast and our food arrived quickly after ordering.

Siew Mai with Quail Egg - We ordered the siew mai from the chef recommendations. I think it was a new kind of siew mai. Does they look cute? :P Most importantly, they taste good too! ^_^

The second dish was the fried spring roll with egg white. This was a dish specially crafted out to suit Singaporeans taste. The egg white taste good when eaten together with the spring roll which made the whole dish stood out. Even though this was a fried dish, it was not oily at all and one could taste the crispiness of the roll :)

Now came the Har Gao. I was not expecting much from this dish because of the previous experience. However, the har gao at Plaza Singapura was surprising good. The shrimps inside the har gao was big, fresh and the har gao was pipping hot and chewy, far different from the dry, sad looking har gaos I had eaten previously before at Toa Payoh.

Not forgetting the legendary baked Char Siew Bun from the "Big 4 Heavenly Kings". It is a must eat dish when you visit Tim Ho Wan. The baked bun we had was so good, crispy and light :) and I had two! :P The taste was as good and comparable to the ones in Hong Kong.

Overall, I must say that the dining experience was much much better than the one at Toa Payoh and the food was even better than the ones I had Hong Kong IFC branch. Maybe the chefs made a difference as the first good Tim Ho Wan dim sum I had was at Hong Kong Tsim Sha Tsui Branch. Nevertheless, we did have a great time there and it changed my perspective on the dim sum :D Will I visit again? Yes, definitely back to the branch at PS :P
